Disorder in Dublin leads to three officers injured, twenty-four jailed

(MENAFN) Three police officers were injured and 24 people arrested during a second night of violence outside a Dublin hotel housing asylum seekers, Irish police said.

The unrest began after an initially peaceful protest over the alleged sexual assault of a young girl nearby turned violent. Stones, bottles, and fireworks were thrown at officers, with one struck in the head by a bottle and another suffering an arm injury.

Of those arrested, 17 adults have been charged with public order offences, while five juveniles were released under the Youth Diversion Programme. Police also seized 15 scooters and e-bikes during the operation.

The clashes followed Tuesday’s rioting, during which a police vehicle was set on fire. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly condemned the violence as “totally unacceptable,” saying it had nothing to do with peaceful protest.

Police said the earlier violence had been planned online. About 2,000 people joined Wednesday’s protest, including what police described as “violent thugs” who attacked officers with projectiles and attempted to breach security lines using horse-drawn carts.

Several officers were hospitalized with injuries, and a police helicopter was targeted with lasers.

Kevin Shortall, principal of a local school attended by children from the hotel, called the situation “tragic” and said the violence reflected “misdirected anger.” He urged people to reject narratives blaming immigrants for social problems, noting that many asylum seekers housed at the hotel had fled war and trauma.
