Ireland pledges long-lasting backing for Ukraine

(MENAFN) Ireland has pledged steadfast and long-term backing for Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made his first official trip to Dublin on Tuesday.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin said “we all wish that your visit here was under different, happier circumstances,” adding that he hopes the Ukrainian leader will one day return under peaceful conditions. Martin stressed that the visit comes at a pivotal moment for both Ukraine and Europe as Kyiv continues defending itself against what he described as “the brutal and illegal war” carried out by Russia.

Condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Irish premier said the Russian leader “seeks to gain an advantage at the negotiating table by intensifying Russia’s relentless onslaught on the frontline and on Ukrainians, on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.” Martin emphasized, “He must never be allowed to succeed.”

He called the nightly waves of drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian territory “shocking,” saying civilians deserve safety in their homes and children should be able to sleep without fear. Ireland, he vowed, will stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes.”

Martin also reiterated strong support for Ukraine’s aspiration to join the European Union, despite hesitation from some EU members. He said Ireland will work to advance accession talks, especially during its upcoming EU presidency, noting that “EU membership transformed our country and underpins our prosperity, and we want the same for our Ukrainian friends.”

He added: “Know that for as long as Ukraine needs our help and support, Ireland will be there for you. Your struggle is our struggle. Your success will be our success. We are with you for as long as it takes.”

During his visit, Zelenskyy addressed the Irish parliament and expressed gratitude for Ireland’s ongoing support in the war with Russia.
