Brussels Protest Targets Israel’s Eurovision Participation

(MENAFN) A group of demonstrators gathered on Tuesday outside the headquarters of Belgian public broadcaster RTBF in Brussels to protest Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Waving Palestinian flags, the protesters voiced opposition to Israel’s inclusion in the competition and accused RTBF of being complicit in allowing its participation.

Some participants placed printed messages on the broadcaster’s metal fencing, expressing their objections to RTBF’s role in the contest. Others held placards reading “End complicity,” calling Israel’s participation unacceptable and urging the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and participating broadcasters to take action.

The protesters also highlighted the deaths of journalists and media workers in Israeli strikes in Gaza.

Meanwhile, several countries—including Slovenia, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Iceland—have reportedly chosen to withdraw from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest in response to Israel’s participation.

Despite these developments and calls from artists and members of the public to boycott, RTBF has decided to proceed with participation and broadcasting responsibilities for Belgium.

The Eurovision Song Contest, one of the world’s largest televised music events, previously saw Russia banned from participation following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
